Willo Zoning Committee Update (January 2020)

 January 9, 2020 The appeal filed by Almeria neighbors opposing the use permit for overnight pet boarding at the proposed Dogtopia at 520 W. McDowell was denied by the City of Phoenix Board of Adjustment. Dogtopia plans to open on March 1, 2020.  The owner stated he will install exterior cameras to monitor employees’ use of the proper trash receptacles, and will put up signage and provide instructions to clients to enter and exit the business from McDowell Rd.

January 23, 2020, 1:30 p.m.  ZA-578-19-4 (Sign). A new application has been filed for large white LED signage at the top of the building at 2020 N. Central Ave. to read, “CBRE Facility Source”. The applicant intends to use 5000K bright white LED modules (the same level of white light that was used on the BMO tower signs when they were first installed) with white sign faces. The applicant proposes dimming the sign by 50% from the hours of 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. (For comparison, the BMO Tower signs are dimmed by 50% when they are first turned on at dusk). The proposed signage at 2020 N. Central will be visible throughout a large area on the east side of Willo. Residents who have concerns about this proposed bright signage should plan to attend the hearing on January 23,2020, 1:30 p.m., Assembly Room C, Phoenix City Hall, 200 West Washington Street, First Floor, Phoenix, Arizona to make your concerns known. February 6, 2020, 9:00 a.m.  ZA-541-19-4 (Billboards) An amended application has been filed for use permits and variances to relocate the three billboards at the northwest corner of Central and Thomas and convert two of them to digital to accommodate the planned mixed-use, high-rise development on that corner. The south-facing billboard, which faces Willo, will be a maximum of 36 feet high. The proposed south-facing billboard on the northwest corner of Central and Thomas may be partially visible from one or more residences in the northeast area of Willo. Residents who have concerns about the proposed billboard should plan to attend the hearing on February 6, 2020 at 9:00 a.m., Calvin Goode Building, 251 W. Washington, Phoenix, AZ to make their concerns known.
