  • Registration: Sign-up is open right now for Block Captains and Floaters. Volunteering is about making Luminaria fun and easy for everyone. As always, we need 1 volunteer to be a Block Captain for each block in Willo; there are 44 blocks. Block Captains coordinate: build parties, placement, and teardown. You don’t have to do all the work; just organize the block to get it done.
  • This year we also need a few “Floaters.” These volunteers might connect Block Captains from different blocks for collaboration, distribute flyers to homes for 1 or 2 blocks, and provide guidance to those needing help. We mostly need help putting together supply boxes for pick up and taking inventory for storage after the event.
  • Pick Up Supplies: Block Captains head to our house to pick up luminaria supplies. Each block gets a box with LED tea lights, paper bags, and instructions, along with sand. No battery change this year – YAY!
  • Build Party: Build parties vary from block to block. They can be big or small, but the more people you have, the merrier! Gather friends and neighbors to help assemble the luminarias. Bring snacks, wine, or make it a potluck. Share your build party ideas with your Block Captain. Who’s your captain? Volunteer or find yours at https://bit.ly/2022-luminaria
  • Placement: On this day, set out the assembled luminarias for your block. A flyer in the supply box will guide you on how to place the lanterns along 3rd or 5th Ave.
  • Group Bike Ride: This super fun bike ride takes place on Friday night and has always been organized by the wonderful folks at www.PhoenixSpokesPeople.com. Bicycles, One-Wheels, and Scooters are welcome; this is a family-friendly event. Decorate and light up your bikes! Wear something festive. Or come as you are – everyone’s welcome. Riders will meet at Walton Park @ 6:00 and set off around the neighborhood @ 6:30 for a beautiful night ride. Expect 100+ people.
  • Teardown & Return: After Christmas, Block Captains are responsible for returning the LED tea lights TURNED OFF and RE-BOXED. Anyone can help but pretty please! Let your Block Captain know, and WHEN COLLECTING THE LED TEA LIGHTS, YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST FLIP THEM OVER AND SLIDE THE SWITCH OFF. Each LED Tea Light has a timer; the light is on at night and off during the day. The timer runs 24/7, and the battery will drain completely if the switch is not turned off. Batteries are expensive, and Willo reuses them.
