November 18th Update on 3rd/5th Avenues

Dear Willo Residents:

As a follow-up to my update at last week’s Willo Board Meeting, here is a follow-up:

As a result of last Friday’s meeting with the City Staff on 3rd Avenue at 4:00 pm for almost 2 hours, I am optimistic that 3rd Avenue will be completed by the end of the year.

Here is what is next for 3rd:

  1. Temporary STOP signs will be installed on 3rd/Encanto BLVD this week. Permanent STOP signs will be installed by the end of the year.
  2. Starting tomorrow, crews will begin installing cycle track opening delineation devices (not bollards) at the intersection of 3rd/Almeria.
  3. Regarding the issue of drivers driving on the parking lane on 3rd Avenue: I asked the city to evaluate the current striping and consider modifications to ensure safety, especially North Bound from Encanto Blvd. They understood.
  4. No pavement modifications are necessary on the 2-way cycle track.
  5. The city promised to update the phoenix.gov/3rd/5th project North of McDowell for all residents.
  6. Again, the goal is to finish this over the next 6 weeks; other details will be forthcoming.

Now onto 5th:

  1. Details of the storm draining issues work on 5th/Encanto Blvd is being completed. This issue still needs to be resolved entirely.
  2. The traffic circle on 5th Avenue will NOT be impacted and will remain as is. Expect STOP signs to be installed at some point.
  3. CONSTRUCTION on 5th Avenue near Edgemont will begin before the end of the year. The process will then move southbound.. Look for more details soon.

So, in closing, “lots” will be going on now, and I will update you only when I have credible information to share.

I am very optimistic now that the City Manager’s office is involved in this process and collaborating with the Streets Dept. The staff has heard us, and we will move forward. I am appreciative of them for listening.

Thanks for your patience and for supporting our neighborhood.

Please do me a favor and drive the speed limit.

Have a great day,

Bob Cannon
