INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS – 3rd Avenue and McDowell Road

 The City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department is starting construction of additional mobility improvements at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and McDowell Road. The overall construction timeframe for these improvements are scheduled to be complete by the end of April 2026.
 
Dates and duration may change depending on weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
Friday, February 20: Crews will be installing new traffic signal poles.

  • Eastbound vehicular traffic on McDowell Road will be reduced to one lane during off peak hours.
  • North and southbound bike lanes will be closed between McDowell Road and Lynwood Street.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained along the west side of 3rd Avenue.  People riding bicycles should also use the west side of 3rd Avenue to safely cross McDowell Road and rejoin the shared bike lanes north of McDowell Road.
  • Traffic signals will be installed but will not be activated until roadway improvements and lane striping are completed at the end of the project.

Monday, February 23 – Monday, March 2: Crews will begin roadway improvements.

  • The concrete median south of McDowell Road will be redesigned to accommodate a designated right-turn lane.
  • East and westbound travel lanes may be temporarily reduced to one lane during off-peak hours.
