What is Block Watch, and how does it work in Willo?
Block Watch is a crime prevention program where residents of a neighborhood actively participate in monitoring their community and reporting suspicious activity to law enforcement. It’s a network of neighbors watching out for one another to reduce crime and enhance neighborhood safety.
In Willo, our Block Watch program is set up with Block Watch captains on each of our 100, 300, and 500 blocks of each street between Thomas Rd and McDowell. The goal of the captains is to bring together residents from their block so that we get to know each other. Neighbors who know each other are more likely to watch out for one another and inform other neighbors and community members about suspicious activity.
Each of the captains also has contact information for the other block watch captains, allowing them to communicate with each other if needed, such as regarding issues in the common alleys or related block watch activities. This communication between neighbors and captains is encouraged.
When a resident or block watch captain sees suspicious or criminal activity, they first report it to the proper government agency and then to their block watch captain. The block watch captain, in turn, reports it to the block watch chairperson. If the resident does not know who their block watch captain is, they can report it to the chairperson at WilloBlockWatch@gmail.com. The chairperson then determines if the incident is timely and/or needs to be reported to the neighborhood at large. If so, the chairperson sends a text message to all residents who have opted into the block watch texting system. To opt in, text the word BLOCKWATCH to 602-560-2616 and enter your full name and address. You may opt out at any time.
